My
name is Paige Grantham I am a Gender Studies major and an Education minor. My first two years at UCLA I was a Nursing
major so I have been both a North Campus and a South Campus major and even here
at UCLA there is a huge separation between the arts and sciences. People say north campus majors are always
dressed nicely and are so friendly where as the south campus majors are always
in sweatpants and are always so serious.
It feels like there is no in between on our Campus. “Snow identified the two cultures as those of
literary intellectuals and natural scientists and he pointed to the curricula
of schools and universities as the source of the problem” (Vesna, pg.121) My example above shows a very example of how
universities are the problem and separating the arts and the sciences.

One
experience I have had at UCLA was I wanted to become a Visual and Performing
Art Education minor (VAPAE) but I was told I was not allowed to because I was
not an Art major. I do not think that is
right because I was not allowed to experiment with my artistic abilities due to
this rule.

Hi, I am person who wears sweat pants and study in South Campus. (Just a Joke!) My major is chemical engineering and I did not take any classes in North Campus last two quarters. Also, I really don’t have much knowledge for English, History, and Art. That’s why I am taking this class to understand artistic point of view. I enjoyed watching your YouTube link. She talked about why we have to combine art and science. I was amazed that the video was recorded at 2002. I defiantly agree that separating university is a problem. There is no interaction between two campuses and does not understand each other.

ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree with you more. I think the way our campus is separated is convenient such that we can get to our classes faster and for such a big campus, it makes it feel like a smaller community. This is also a problem though because the lack of integration has caused for us to lose that balance in our lives. What I'm saying is, as a South campus major, I feel out of place in the North campus environment of being political and expressive. I do constantly feel stressed out and I absolutely love sweatpants! I enjoyed reading your blog, good bye!
I agree with your views that clear differences exist between the North campus and the South campus students. The North campus students seem to have more extra time to spare for non-academic activities compared to the South campus students. This is because Majors offered in the South campus are more engaging and require lots of time and concentration hence the seriousness among its students. I also loved your YouTube link and am looking forward to more of your posts.
ReplyDeleteYour ideas are very true especially for students at UCLA. I believe that many of us have had similar experiences. Your you tube video was very interesting, and it will be interesting to see how education progresses even more. It is a very exciting topic and one that I had not thought about very much before this week.
ReplyDeleteYour comment about the exclusion of people from minors reminded me of my own interest for design and media (the concepts themselves, not even the actual major) and how I would always hear about the entry requirements like having a portfolio of prior works to even be considered into the program. I spent most of high school preparing for a life science education path and being here without the opportunity to expand my basic artistic knowledge and techniques is an honest disappointment, and pushes me even further into the science culture.
